4057 Inside by Hypnos

This was a tricky puzzle from Hypnos. The "alternative" and "associative" clues seemed to indicate that the theme was PRISON, hinted at by the title. The answers to alternative clues had synonyms that were other names for prisons and those of the associative clues linked to words for a prison sentence. The real theme was PORRIDGE, which could be deduced from the cryptic clue given by extra letters in wordplay. This gave “Grid is given stir in hole”. (Anagram GRID in PORE). Extra letters in 7 of the alternative and associative clues could make SPANDAU, another prison. This had to be written below the grid as well as the linking word to RIVET, which was CLINK. Finally the solver had to discover and highlight in the grid a variant of PORRIDGE and an appropriately placed accessory. These were BROSE and THIBLE, a porridge spoon, which was placed diagonally, dipping into the brose.

Links and extra letters are shown in [ ]
