3977: City Tour by Mango

Mango gave us a superb puzzle with a most original theme. The initial letters of misplaced words in clues gave the co-ordinates of the beginnings of words to be moved in the grid and their next location. The puzzle had the theme of the Tower of Hanoi which appeared in French – La Tour d’Hanoi, hinted at by the title. This is a mathematical game which consists of three pegs, and a number of disks of different sizes which can slide onto any peg. The puzzle starts with the disks neatly stacked in order of size on one peg, the smallest at the top, thus making a conical shape. In this crossword the words, LA, TOUR & HANOI represented the three discs and were re-located in the minimum of seven moves. The game was invented by Edouard Lucas and his name and initial could be highlighted in pyramid shape in the positions given by the eighth co-ordinates.

Gregson suspects that the word “optionally” was added to the preamble by the editors.
