Listener 3967: Lots to Find by Franc

Franc gave us a tough puzzle with a theme that was quite difficult to spot, given that it affected both answers and clues. The initial letters of extra words gave BOOK OF ST ALBANS, a book printed around 1480, with essays on hunting, heraldry and hawking as well as a list of collective nouns for animals. The latter was the theme of the puzzle, with animals replaced by their group, and vice versa, in the answers and the wordplay. Thus, the answer CAMEL was replaced by STRING, as in “ a string of camels”.

The unchecked and mutually checking letters in 14 entries might reveal A SETTER THINKS BREWER GOLD, ED. This was a reference to a citation in Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and  Fable.

Replacements are shown in square brackets. Extra words in bold type.
